What is a Patient Portal?

Our Electronic Medical Record Company has developed a program that allows patients to access their health information through a secure internet portal, similar to logging into a bank’s website to view your checking account. This Portal is managed by an outside vendor with continuous updates to ensure that it is secure and private. The services available through the portal are no different than one would receive by calling our office; the portal is simply a convenience for our patients. Access to your health information through the portal is only available with your signed request. With your portal access you will receive a secure email account to ensure that messages sent and received through the portal are private. In most instances, you will receive an e-mail asking you to login to the portal and check your inbox when there is a message or laboratory value that needs to be viewed. No sensitive information will ever be sent outside of the portal. All messages within the portal will become a part of your permanent medical record.

What Will I Be Able to Do?

  • Appointments: You will be able to schedule, reschedule, or cancel your own appointments online.

  • Messages: You will be able to send and receive messages to or from our office.

  • Appointments: You will be able to schedule, reschedule, or cancel your own appointments online.

  • Lab Results: you will be able to view your laboratory results with the accompanying comments from the physicians.

  • Referral Requests: Send us your referral request and reason for referral. Once approved by your physician this will be processed and a referral will be made

  • Refill Requests: Mark the medicine requested on your medicine list, verify the dosage, and select your pharmacy. These will be reviewed by your physician and processed within 24 hours.

  • Manage Demographics: Go to your chart and verify phone numbers, addresses, and insurance information. Send corrections so that your chart is always up to date.

  • View Current Medicine and Problem Lists: You will have access to your medicine and problem list and will be able to verify health information. You can also print your Health Summary to bring with you to other specialist visits.

  • Insurance or Billing Questions: Send messages about insurance or bill questions directly to our billing department. You should expect a reply within 48 hours.

  • Appointment Reminders: Receive appointment reminders directly through your e-mail

How Do I Sign Up?

  • You can ask our front staff for a Patient Account Enablement form or print this off of our website by clicking here. This must be signed and returned to the office prior to activating your account. This form reviews the features of the portal and the terms of the agreement. This is valid for 1 year and you will be notified when it is about to expire. Once the form is signed you will be given a login and password that will enable you to access the portal.

    Although not currently available we have been told that in the next couple of months, we will have the ability to offer:

  • Online bill payment.

  • Pre-visit details. This will allow you to send your current health concerns directly to the physician prior to your visit so he or she will have a chance to review this before your appointment.

What if I Don’t Sign Up?

You can be assured that you will continue to receive the same excellent care that you have always received at Asheville Medicine and Pediatrics. We will continue to call with laboratory results and will return all phone messages.
